Update on Our Fight Against the Heidelberg Athens Quarry
Our efforts to protect Inner East Athens from the impact of the Heidelberg Athens Quarry are in full force. We continue to raise awareness about the environmental and health risks posed by the quarry's expansion, including concerns over air quality, noise pollution, and potential damage to local wildlife habitats.
Through community meetings, and collaboration with environmental experts, we’re making our voices heard. Our team is also exploring every possible avenue to halt further expansion and ensure the quarry is held accountable to the highest environmental standards. We’re committed to preserving the quality of life in our neighborhood and safeguarding the health and safety of our community members.
Thank you to everyone who has supported this effort—whether by attending meetings, signing petitions, or spreading the word. Together, we’re standing strong to protect our home. Please stay tuned for upcoming actions and ways you can help in this important fight.

On August 29, 2022, Athens-Clarke County District 2 Representative abandoned her post, after secretly moving out of District 2.
She held her resignation to Governor Kemp, forcing the need for Special Election.
On September 13, The Athens-Board of Elections (BOE) met and discussed a November 8, 2022 Special Election to fill the vacancy. No vote was taken.
The Athens-Clarke County Board of Commissioners then passed a resolution calling for the Special Election to be held on March 23, 2022. Moving the election meant the voters of District 2 would be without representation for nearly seven months.
On September 20, the Athens BOE announced the Special Election was being moved to March 23, 2023.
On October 1, 2022, Inner East Athens, and other District 2 voters filed notice of suit to challenge the decision. The notice was ignored by the BOE and the Athens-Clarke County Commission.
On October 4, 2022, Inner East Athens and other District 2 voters filed a Writ of Mandamus asking the Court to order that the Special Elections be held on November 8, 2022. Counsel Dexter Wimbish argued that pushing the election to March 2023 would disenfranchise District 2 voters.
On October 5, 2023, Judge Wade Padgett denied the Writ of Mandamus stating there was no abuse of discretion by the BOE as there was not enough time to hold the election without causing voter confusion and that the November 8, 2022, Special Election would not meet the 29-day deadline to call such an election.
Therefore, District 2 voters are now subject to "taxation without representation as they will be without a District 2 County Commissioner until March 23, 2023, Special Election.
We are asking you to Call Governor Brian Kemp at (404) 656-1776 and ask him to appoint an Athens-Clarke County District 2 Commissioner to fill the unexpired term of Mariah Parker.
